Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism

Introduction

The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism is the UK government’s statutory training programme for all health and social care staff under the Health and Care Act 2022. It was created in memory of Oliver McGowan, a young autistic man with a mild learning disability, whose preventable death in 2016 highlighted systemic gaps in healthcare understanding.

This training equips staff with the knowledge, confidence, and practical tools needed to provide safe, respectful, and person-centered care. It is co-produced with people who have lived experience of autism and learning disability, alongside healthcare professionals.

By completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand what learning disabilities and autism are, and their impact on daily life.
  • Recognise the rights of people with learning disabilities and autism under UK law.
  • Apply person-centered approaches, communication strategies, and reasonable adjustments in practice.
  • Fulfil legal and professional responsibilities, including compliance with CQC inspection requirements.
