The Skill That Underpins Everything Else
Every clinical error, every complaint, every avoidable harm in healthcare can be traced back, at least in part, to a communication failure. Not because clinicians do not care – but because communication is genuinely hard, especially under pressure, across hierarchies, between disciplines, and with people who are frightened, in pain, or cognitively impaired.
For first-timers: communication is not just about being friendly. It is a clinical skill. It can be learned, practised, and improved. This course gives you the foundations.
For refreshers: the most experienced clinicians often have the biggest communication blind spots. Hierarchy, habit, and assumption all accumulate over time. Be honest with yourself about where your communication lets people down.

'The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.'

Research shows that patients retain less than 50% of what clinicians tell them.
That is not a patient failure. It is a communication design failure.
Our job is to communicate in a way that is genuinely received and understood.

Objectives
By the end: understand why communication matters clinically; master verbal and non-verbal communication; practise active listening; adapt communication for diverse needs; use structured clinical communication tools; handle difficult conversations; and understand confidentiality.
