drifts over time, updated guidance, and honest reflection questions.

Duration: approximately 1.5-2 hours   |   Pass mark: 70%

Read through each chapter as if your trainer is speaking directly to you.

When Every Second Counts
Emergency Life Support (ELS) builds on basic first aid to address the specific emergency scenarios most commonly encountered by healthcare workers: cardiac arrest with AED and advanced support, the deteriorating patient, anaphylaxis, stroke recognition, seizures, and hypoglycaemia. These are the situations where your knowledge, speed, and composure directly determine whether the patient lives or dies.
For first-timers: You are entering a profession where medical emergencies will happen around you. This knowledge is not theoretical – it will be tested on a real shift, often when you least expect it.
For refreshers: Emergency responses are perishable skills. If you have not been part of a resuscitation attempt or emergency drill recently, this course is especially important.

Annual Refresher Reminder
Refresher: Studies consistently show that CPR quality degrades within weeks of training.
When did you last run through your ward's emergency equipment?
Do you know where the crash trolley is, whether it was checked today, and what is in it?

Objectives
By the end: manage in-hospital cardiac arrest; identify and respond to anaphylaxis; recognise stroke using FAST; manage hypoglycaemia; respond to a seizure; use the NEWS2 tool; and understand the chain of survival.
